The Tliltocatl vagans, a beauty of the region. Not aggressive, and its bite of no medical importance. With urticating hair, its venom is studied against muscular dystrophy. Considered nowadays as Vulnerable by the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora). Can be distinguished from the Red trump tarantula (B. Vagans) because of the absence of the red leg markings.
The "tarantula" name comes after the city of Taranto, IT. Some speak about a tradition where as to extract the venom of the tarantula wolf spider (Lycosa tarantula), the Tarantella dance was practiced as to get the venom out of the pacient.
Tliltocatl comes from Nahuatl, meaning black spider. In Maya they call it Chihuo.
